Get started with Solar Fab

The Solar Fab Core is open to ASU students and faculty, researchers from external institutions, and industry/corporate users.

Safety training 

 In general, the mandatory safety training that is a prerequisite to working in the Solar Fab is basically a five-step process which is preferably completed in the order shown below.

  1. MacroTechnology Works Site Orientation. Contact Brian McNamara, [email protected], 480-828-9015 if you have any questions regarding access to the building.
  2. Safety training is provided through Workday Learning. Customers from outside of ASU will receive access after onboarding with Core Research Facilities staff. Contact [email protected] with any questions. Required trainings include:
  3. Solar Fab-specific training. Contact Bill Dauksher at 480-965-8723 or [email protected] to schedule your training.

Building access 

At the satisfactory completion of safety training, an ISAAC access form should be filled out. Access is usually granted within 24 hours.

Schedule equipment training and use

Equipment-specific training and equipment use are scheduled through iLab.

Create your Solar Fab iLab ID:

  1. Log in to iLab and go to the Solar Fab page.
  2. Click on the ”Request services” tab at the top of the screen. 
  3. Click on “SFL-ID.” 
  4. Click on the “Request service” button on the right.
  5. Fill out the request form and then click the “Submit request to core” button at the bottom.

Schedule training

  1. Go to the Solar Fab ”Request services” page on iLab and click on “Training.” 
  2. Click on the “Request service” button on the right. Note: Training length depends on the complexity of the equipment and the experience of the prospective user. 
  3. Fill out the form, then click on the “Save completed form” button.
  4. After you have saved your form, click the “Submit request to core” button at the bottom.

Schedule equipment use

The Solar Fab only uses iLab for tool reservation for more heavily used equipment in the lab. All other equipment can be used on a walk-up basis. To schedule equipment:

  1. Go to the Solar Fab “Schedule equipment” page.
  2. Select the equipment you would like to use.
  3. Click the “View schedule” button on the right.
  4. Create an entry for the desired day and time.

Uber discounts for students

Solar Fab is located in the ASU Research Park near the Loop 101 and Elliot Road in Tempe. To assist students coming from the Tempe campus, ASU has partnered with Uber to offer a credit for round-trip travel between Tempe campus and the MacroTechnology Works building.
