Get started

The Eyring Materials Center includes a broad array of sophisticated instruments for materials and life science sample characterization, as well as surface, optical and structural analysis, high-resolution imaging, and defect analysis.

Academic and industrial researchers have open access to our instruments and our professional staff. The center actively trains users to operate these instruments independently, and we conduct periodic workshops to reinforce the learning process.

All users must have an account on iLab in order to schedule instruments and training. If you do not already have an account, go to the iLab home page and follow the instructions to create an account. For more information on ilab, click here.

Required safety training
  1. All users must attend the ASU Lab Safety, Hazardous waste management and Fire Safety courses prior to working unsupervised on any Eyring Materials Center equipment. For more information, contact ASU Environmental Health and Safety at 480-965-1823 or ehstraining@asu.edu.
  2. Radiation Safety Training is required for anyone wishing to use the following equipment:
    • Rigaku SmartLab diffractometer.
    • STOE transmission Diffractometer.
    • Xenocs SAXS instrument.
    • Sigray X-ray absorption Spectrometer.
    • Powder X-ray diffractometer (PANalytical Aeris).
    • X-ray topography (Rigaku XRT-100).
    • Ion Beam Analysis of Materials (IBeAM).
    • X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer -Energy Dispersive (Bruker S2 PUMA).
  3. Contact the Radiation Safety office at 480-965-6140 or radiationsafety@asu.edu for more information. Once radiation safety training is complete, bring your dosimeter badge, which is required to operate the instrument.
  4. The center also requires equipment-specific training for most of the instruments available for use. See the “Equipment-specific training” section below for more information.
Equipment-specific training
  1. Sign in to iLab using the button in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Go to the facility in which you want to access equipment: Goldwater Materials Science Facility, John M. Cowley Center for High Resolution Electron Microscopy, Life Science Electron Microscopy, or Metals, Environmental and Terrestrial Analytical Laboratory.
  3. Select the “Request Services” tab.
  4. Fill out the online form and click the “submit request to core” button. A facility representative will contact you to schedule training.
To schedule time on the equipment
  1. Sign in to iLab using the button in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Go to the facility in which you want to schedule equipment: Goldwater Materials Science Facility, John M. Cowley Center for High Resolution Electron Microscopy, Life Science Electron Microscopy, or Metals, Environmental and Terrestrial Analytical Laboratory.
  3. Select the “Schedule Equipment” tab. Note: Only trained users are permitted to schedule time on the instrument calendars.
  4. Click on the “View Schedule” button next to the instrument of interest.
  5. Click and drag on the timeframe you would like to schedule your reservation.
